Measuring A Blind's Recess or Exact Window Measuments

What is a Recess?

INSIDE RECESS (RECESS) or OUTSIDE RECESS (EXACT)

VERTICAL BLINDS - RECESS

  • Measure from side to side, starting at the top of the window. You can then run the tape measure down the window to find the smallest width.
  • Then measure the drop. We suggest you start from one side and slide the tape along to find the smallest drop.

If you order the blind as recess then the manufacturer will make allowances to let the blind operate within the gap.  Quality blinds will also have top fixing brackets as standard. These allow you to fit the blind in the top of the recess.

VERTICAL BLINDS - EXACT

  • Vertical blinds are usually fitted inside the recess, but if you want to go outside of the recess then decide how much of an overlap you would like each side of the window, and how high you would like the blind to be over the window.

You may want to check that face fixing brackets are supplied if you order your blind with an exact measurement.

VENETIAN BLINDS - INCLUDING WOOD - RECESS

  • Measure from side to side, starting at the top of the window. You can then run the tape measure down the window to find the smallest width.
  • Then measure the drop. We suggest you start from one side and slide the tape along to find the longest drop. This means the blind will sit on the window sill when closed.

If you order the blind as recess then the manufacturer should make an allowance to let the blind operate within the gap.

ROLLER BLINDS - RECESS

NB - the fabric on a roller blind will never be the same as the measurements supplied because the controls on the rail take up about 3cm to 4cm on the roller blind. This is not usually a problem because the blind will still cover the window frame.

The blinds' slat colour

Wood is a natural material with minor variations in texture and colour absorption.  Each blind is subtle unique in its 'natural look'.

As is the case will all computer monitors the colour setting of your monitor will not be perfect.  To fully appreciate and match colours, under your desired light conditions and circumstances, you may be tempted to order a sample blind.  This may not help because manufacturing production runs may be based upon colour batches of dyes and pigments.

A slight variance of colour and grain will exist, even between slats on the same blind, but this is the beauty and appeal of a real Basswood product.

Wooden Venetian Blind Stack Guide

With wooden venetian blinds you need to consider the “stack”. The stack is the depth of the slats on the blind when it is pulled all the way up.

If your window has a fanlight at the top or your room is particularly dark and you want to pull the blind up to let more light in, rather than just control the light by controlling the angle of the venetian blind slats, then the following guide will give you an indication of how much room the blind will take.

The stack is reduced with 50mm slats because you need less slats to cover the drop when the blind is closed, so this may be the better option if you don’t have room at the top of the window.

The measurement stated includes the headrail and bottom rail, ie from the very top of the blind to the bottom.

What are the compacted stack sizes?

Something you may need to consider is what is known as the “stack”...

The blinds' slat size - 25mm, 35mm or 50mm?

Modern wooden venetians come in three slat sizes:

  • 25mm slat
  • 35mm slat
  • 50mm slat

The most popular wood slat size is 35mm at the moment. If you are buying for multiple windows then stick to the same slat size throughout the room and preferably house.

It would be normal to use 50mm on a large window (say a patio door) and 50mm also offers a more colonial feel.

25mm slats suit a smaller window, whilst 35mm seems to strike the best balance on most windows.

Tips before buying your Wooden Venetian Blinds

Wooden Venetian Blinds are available from plenty of places on the Internet, so we have compiled a list of helpful insider tips to aid you in making the best choice of wooden blinds to suit your purpose and your budget:

  1. First of all look at the quality. Wooden Venetian Blinds have to be good because they may be in daily use. You don’t want to buy cheap wood blinds that would warp and fade or use inferior pull cords which break over time.
  2. Secondly, you need to have fantastic service. Look for a phone number of customer support in addition to email and postal contact. On many occasions your blinds purchase will be handled smoothly but look for back up just in case you should need it. We have a demonstration video on our website which should help you with window measurement.  We also have a video showing you how to fit your own blinds - the first blinds website to do this as far as we know. Fitting instructions should also be included in the blinds delivery.
  3. Thirdly you should looked at price and your budget. Our website lists cheap wooden blinds at advantageous prices. Our prices are updated automatically and frequently so that you always know the true price for what you want.  The offers listed show discount wood blinds rather than “cheap” wood blinds. For the sake of clarity, the total price should take into account any postage charges.
  4. Fourthly, you need to seek out your guarantee. The guarantee can be on pricing or on the product itself.  Look for a price match guarantee and once satisfied then look at the terms and conditions for your manufacturers guarantee.  Bear in mind that if you should order a custom blind then you will not be able to return it just because you have changed you mind. Take a look at our measuring guidance video and consider the slat sizes and colours carefully.
  5. Finally, you need to consider the speed on delivery. Your order should be sent automatically to the manufacturer if it's a custom blind.  If the blind is standard then it should come from stock. If the supplier is busy your order it should be still get to be processed as soon as you order. Standard delivery is normally 3 working days, but some blinds suppliers offer an express delivery. To take advantage of next day delivery you just need to place you order and instruction before a time limit normally between 12:00 and 14:00 hours. This should ensure that your order will then be delivered next working day but check for on-site terms and conditions.

Wooden Blinds and Warping

It doesn’t matter where you purchase your wooden blinds from, if they are made of wood, there is a chance of the slats warping slightly.

Wood is obviously a natural product and changes in temperature or moisture in the air will make it expand and contract, and this can cause the slats to warp slightly.

We are not trying to put you off buying wood because it is not a huge problem, but in the interest of honesty we would like to make you aware of this in advance of your order. As it is a natural process, no guarantee can cover it and we cannot replace blinds.

If you are unlucky enough to suffer some warpage or you damage the blind, a quality wooden blind may include 3 spare slats for you to save purchasing a new blind - another reason to buy only quality blinds.
